Wonderful Free Vintage Zodiac Sign Pictures To Print

I found a wonderful collection of astrological zodiac sign pictures from the Urania’s Mirror, or a view of the Heavens,  published in 1824.    The beautiful zodiac illustrations are by the English cartologist Sydney Hall. 

The Urania’s Mirror originally contained 32 wonderful astronomical star chart cards.  I have decided to share the ones related to the zodiac signs.

The Zodiac is an area of the sky which is divided into 12 signs and corresponds to the constellations Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pieces. 

Everyone knows their zodiac sign, as each character is associated with particular dates in the calendar.  Astrologers have attributed specific personality traits to each of the zodiac signs.  Some people take them seriously and carefully study their horoscopes based on their star signs. 

Each of the 12 horoscope signs belongs to one of the four elements – Air, Fire, Water and Earth. In Astrology, these elements represent an essential energy that acts in each of us. It supposedly helps us better understand our potential and positive traits and deal with negative ones.

When I came across these vintage zodiac sign pictures, I loved the illustrations next to the constellation charts.  I thought they would look wonderful framed. The zodiac sign pictures could also be used to make personalized handcrafted gifts or birthday cards.

The Vintage Zodiac Sign Illustrations

1. AQUARIUS – Zodiac Sign Picture

The Sun is in the Aquarius sign between about January 21 and about February 20. Even though Aquarius is known as the water carrier it is an Air Sign.

As my birthday falls on Valentine’s day (14th February), Aquarius is my star sign.

2. PISCES – Zodiac Sign Pictures

Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits the area of Pisces between February 19 and March 20. Pisces is represented by two fish and is a water sign.  It is one of the earliest zodiac signs on record and “Pisces” is the Latin word for “Fish.”

With many of the vintage zodiac sign illustrations of the sign Pisces the two fish often drawn are koi. Which according to Greek myth  Aphrodite and her son Eros transformed in order to escape the monster Typhon.

3. ARIES – Zodiac Sign Illustration

Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits the Aries sign from approximately March 20 to April 21 each year. Aries is the Latin word for ram, and the Aries zodiac sign is a fire sign.

4. TAURUS – Zodiac Sign Picture

The Sun transits in Taurus from approximately April 20 until May 20. Taurus is an earth sign and the word is the Latin for a bull.

Both my husband and father are Taureans. Which is just as well, because apparently Taureans and Aquarians are a good match if you believe in horoscopes.

5. GEMINI – Zodiac Sign Pictures

Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits the Gemini sign between May 21 and June 21.  Gemini is an air sign represented by the Greek mythology twins Castor and Pollux, known as the Dioscuri.

Interesting fact; NASA named its two-person space capsule Project Gemini after the zodiac sign because the spacecraft could carry two astronauts.

6. CANCER – Zodiac Sign Illustration

Those who are born from approximately June 22 to July 22 are born under the zodiac sign of Cancer. It is a water sign depicted by the image of a crab.

7. LEO – Astrological Illustration

The Sun transits the zodiac sign of Leo on average between July 23 and August 22 each year. Leo means lion and it is a fire sign.

8. VIRGO – Astrological Sign

The Sun transits Virgo on average between August 23 and September 22. Virgo is an earth sign and in Greek mythology is represented by  Astraea. She was the last immortal to abandon Earth at the end of the Silver Age when the gods fled to Olympus.

9. LIBRA – Vintage Zodiac Illustration

Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits Libra zodiac area on average between September 23 and October 22. Libra is an air sign symbolized by a set of scales and is associated with justice. According to the writer Manilius, Roman judges are born under the sign of Libra.

In astrology, a broad description of those who are born under this sign are calm, rational, and detached when dealing with situations. My sister is a Libraen and that description doesn’t fit with her personality, but don’t tell her I said that.

10. SCORPIO – Zodiac Illustration

The Sun transits Scorpio on average from October 23 to November 22. Scorpio is a water sign associated with three different animals: the scorpion, the snake, and the eagle (or phoenix).

11. SAGITTARIUS – Zodiac Sign Pictures

Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun transits Sagittarius between approximately November 23 and December 21.

This is a fire sign represented by a centaur from Greek mythology, a creature that is a half-human and a half horse. Also known as the Archer, Sagittarius is represented by the symbol of a bow and arrow.

12. CAPRICORN – Vintage Zodiac Sign Pictures

Under the tropical zodiac, the sun transits Capricorn from about December 21 to January 21. Capricorn is an earth sign and a kind of sea-goat. Its symbol is based on the Sumerians’ god of wisdom and waters, Enki, with the head and upper body of a goat and the lower body and tail of a fish.
