Beautiful Vintage Tulip Paintings To Download For Free

It is believed that tulips got their name from the Persian word for a turban, which the flower is supposed to resemble. When I think of tulips, I automatically think of Amsterdam.

The two things are strongly linked in my mind because of the song and because the Dutch have been the primary producers of tulips since the 17th century. Hence, there are many beautiful tulip paintings by Dutch artists such as Rembrandt.

The Netherlands produces over 3 billion tulip bulbs a year. Visiting Keukenhof is a must if you are ever visiting Holland in the spring. It’s the world’s largest and most famous flower park, with over 7 million flower bulbs planted yearly.

Tulips are popular flowers. Probably because they are bright, colourful and showy, they are relatively easy to grow and mainly come in red, yellow, orange, pink and white. There are over 75 different species of tulips. They are considered a symbol of love, particularly the red ones.

Here I have curated a collection of copyright free tulip paintings and botanical illustrations that are free to print.

The Vintage Tulip Paintings

1. Sylvestris Tulip 1885

This is a lovely tulip painting showing the anatomy of the Sylvestris Tulip.
These yellow tulips have lemon-scented flowers, which are pointed in shape. They can reach a height of around 25cm

This particular tulip illustration is from the German flower book “Flora von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz 1885″ by Otto Wilhelm Thomé.

2. Single and Double Tulip 1870

A double tulip is a tulip with extra petals. So in these tulip paintings, the large flower at the top of the page is the double tulip. This particular tulip illustration is from the “The California Horticulturist and Floral Magazine” (1870).

4. Tulip 1822

I love the detail of the water droplets on the leaves of this tulip painting. I don’t know much about it, except that it was painted in 1822 by the self-taught English flower painter Valentine Bartholomew.

I don’t know much about this lovely watercolour painting of 4 tulips, except that the artist is the Croatian Slavko Raškaj. These tulips would have been painted in the late 19th century.

There is a gorgeous print of a group of tulips in the famous book The Temple of Flora and several in Marshal’s Florilegium.

Other flowers I associate with spring are wild bluebells that carpet the forest flower and daffodils.
